SB 1383 (Food Recovery)
In 2016, the state of California passed SB1383 a multi-faceted bill addressing organic waste. The Town of Mammoth Lakes is exempt from composting requirements of the bill under both the rural and high altitude exemptions. However, food recovery requirements and other aspects of the bill still apply to the Town of Mammoth Lakes.
In order to reduce food waste and address food insecurity, Senate Bill (SB) 1383 requires excess food be donated to food recovery organizations. Food recovery organizations are groups that distribute excess food to community members in need. Grocery Stores, restaurants and other food generators are required to donate the maximum amount of food they would otherwise dispose of to food recovery organizations.
SB 1383 requires that local jurisdictions list food recovery organizations on their websites. In the Town of Mammoth Lakes, the following food recovery organizations operate:
Salvation Army Mammoth
