Work is Underway to Improve Town Multi-Use Paths (MUP’s) and Streets

Town residents and our many visitors can look forward to new ‘smooth’ rehabilitated multi-use paths or MUP’s on the popular Mammoth Lakes Trail System Town Loop. On July 21, Town Council awarded the $2.38 million Local Road and MUP Rehabilitation STIP Project to Qualcon Contractors, Inc. Funding was provided by The CalTrans State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) and work began on September 27. Please click here to review the construction map that highlights the many streets and MUP’s planned for improvements through October 20. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.

Town Zoning Map

Transient Rental Zoning 101

One of the primary functions of the Finance Department is to process new business applications. For transient rental businesses there are two applications, Business Tax Certificate Application and a TOT Certificate Application. A separate TOT certificate application must be completed for each property. Before the certificates are issued and transient rentals can be conducted the applications go through an approval process including verifying that the property is properly zoned.

The town-zoning map consists of 19 different zoning blocks. The zoning blocks where transient rentals are allowed include: Downtown, Residential Multi-Family 2, Resort, North Village Specific Plan and Mixed Lodging/Residential. The Finance Department has an active and aggressive enforcement program that pursues illegal transient rentals. Illegal rentals are subject to administrative citations of up to $1,000 per day, as well as penalties, interest and enforcement charges on past due TOT and TBID. The Town Zoning Map and the Zoning Reference Guide are available on the Town of Mammoth Lakes website.

Bear damage

Be Aware of Bears in Mammoth Lakes

All MLPD Officers are trained to deal with bears. Officers also spend a lot of time educating the public on how to avoid these conflicts. We expect that the bears will be even more active in Town with the campgrounds closed and winter hibernation just around the corner. Please help us protect our bears by keeping your trash secured, your vehicles locked and clear of food, your home secured with windows and doors closed and do not leave food outside (including bird feeders). You can also help by reporting any open dumpsters or lost bags of trash by calling: (760) 932-7549, option 7 to have MLPD Officers dispatched to the location.
