Celebrate Park and Recreation Month with FREE Activities

Since 1985, America has celebrated July as Park and Recreation Month. A program of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), the goal is to raise awareness of the vital impact that parks, recreation and conservation have on communities across the United States. Parks are at the center of so many experiences and memories — moments that park and recreation professionals help make happen. They are places to gather with friends and family, spaces to celebrate life’s special moments, spots of respite and healing, sites that connect us with essential community services, and so much more.

Make memories with us and help tell #OurParkAndRecStory with these FREE family-friendly activities this July:

Community Recreation Center (CRC) Update

Work continues on the site in preparation for the installation of the Sprung Performance Arena. Subcontractors are working on the building foundation along with the installation of underground utilities. As per the Town's Municipal Code, work is permitted on the site from Monday - Saturday from 7:00am – 8:00pm. However, at times, the Town may need to authorize work to start earlier to accommodate significant work.

Temporary park closure: For the duration of construction for the new Community Recreation Center (estimated 12 months), the Mammoth Creek Park playground, restrooms and parking lot will be CLOSED to the public. The Town will maintain public restrooms on the eastside of Mammoth Creek Park accessible from the multi-use path.  We invite you to enjoy one of our many playgrounds at Trails End Park, Shady Rest Park and the Community Center.  We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as we work towards enhancing our community recreation amenities. For additional information about the new CRC, please visit the dedicated website and look for #crcupdates on Facebook.

Wear a Mask

Mono County Public Health Recommends the Wearing of Face Coverings Indoors

In response to increasing COVID-19 cases locally and statewide, on July 19, Mono County Public Health recommended the resumption of wearing face
coverings for both vaccinated and unvaccinated residents and visitors within indoor public spaces. The added concerns of the Delta variant, as well as a number of “breakthrough” cases (positive COVID-19 cases in fully vaccinated individuals) are cause for concern and could lead to potential rapid virus spread in the Mono County community if not properly mitigated. Unvaccinated residents, and visitors are urged to schedule a vaccination appointment or attend an upcoming Mono County Walk-In Clinic to receive their free vaccination.

Wilderness Permits

Wilderness Permit Reservation and Pickup Procedures

The Inyo National Forest would like to inform wilderness visitors of current wilderness permit reservation and pickup procedures. The forest continues to face extremely high demand from the recreating public, including visitors to wilderness areas. The first step for visitors is to go to recreation.gov to make a wilderness permit reservation. For the Inyo National Forest, www.recreation.gov/permits/233262 is the direct link to the permit reservation site. There is also a website for learning more about the reservation process at www.fs.usda.gov/main/inyo/passes-permits/recreation.

Once you have your wilderness permit reservation, please plan to pick up your reserved permits in person at one of three visitor centers:

  • Lone Pine: Interagency Visitor Center, open 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.

  • Bishop: White Mountain Ranger Station, open Thursday through Monday 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m., closed for lunch from 12 p.m. - 1 p.m.

  • Lee Vining: Mono Basin Scenic Area Visitor Center open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.

Although the Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center is open, it is not currently staffed by the Forest Service and wilderness permits cannot be printed there. Email instructions can be found at: www.fs.usda.gov/goto/inyo/wildernesspermitpickup.
