Celebrate Park and Recreation Month with FREE Activities

Since 1985, America has celebrated July as Park and Recreation Month. A program of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), the goal is to raise awareness of the vital impact that parks, recreation and conservation have on communities across the United States. Parks are at the center of so many experiences and memories — moments that park and recreation professionals help make happen. They are places to gather with friends and family, spaces to celebrate life’s special moments, spots of respite and healing, sites that connect us with essential community services, and so much more.

Make memories with us and help tell #OurParkAndRecStory with these FREE family-friendly activities this July: 

FREE Swim Sundays at the Whitmore Pool
  • Time: 12-6pm 
  • Dates: July 11, 18 & 25 
FREE Friday Night Skate at the Mammoth RecZone
  • Time: 6-8pm 
  • Dates: July 9 & 23

Beat the Heat at the Whitmore Pool!

The Whitmore Pool is OPEN for full operations (including swim lessons and public recreational swimming). Join us every Saturday from 10am-6pm and Sunday from 12-6pm. Lap swim is currently scheduled every morning Monday-Friday and Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Please be aware the Whitmore Pool is closed for afternoon Lap Swim on Thursday, July 1 and closed for operations on Sunday, July 4.

Parks and Facilities Update

Whitmore Pool, Trails End Park, Volcom Brothers Skatepark, Shady Rest DiscGolfPark, Shady Rest Park, Whitmore Recreation Area, Community Tennis Courts (1-4) and the multi-use pathways throughout town and the Lakes Basin are OPEN. Learn more about our parks and facilities here. 


Community Recreation Center (CRC) Update 

The July 4 weekend is upon us and work continues on the site in preparation for the installation of the Sprung Performance Arena. Subcontractors are working on the building foundation along with the installation of underground utilities. Work on the site will end for the long weekend on Friday, July 2 and resume on Tuesday, July 6.


Temporary park closure: For the duration of construction for the new Community Recreation Center (estimated 12 months), the Mammoth Creek Park playground, restrooms and parking lot will be CLOSED to the public. The Town will maintain public restrooms on the eastside of Mammoth Creek Park accessible from the multi-use path.  We invite you to enjoy one of our many playgrounds at Trails End Park, Shady Rest Park and the Community Center.  We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as we work towards enhancing our community recreation amenities. Town July 4 Map

Celebrate the Fourth of July in the Town of Mammoth Lakes

Celebrate Independence Day this year in a fun, safe and responsible manner in Mammoth Lakes. Many family-friendly and popular events are scheduled on July 4 including the Lions Club Pancake Breakfast, Footloose Freedom Mile, Arts on the 4th, Chamber of Commerce Parade, Pops in the Park and the traditional Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular at Crowley Lake. To plan your July 4, please visit the Mammoth Lakes Chamber of Commerce website that includes links to events including a detailed map of the routes, closures and detours.

To ensure a safe holiday experience for everyone, please observe the following:
  • Personal fireworks are prohibited within Mono County, including the Inyo National Forest (INF), and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands. Be smart; leave the fireworks to the professionals!
  • Due to EXTREME FIRE DANGER, the Mammoth Lakes Fire Protection District, Long Valley Fire Department, Mammoth Lakes Police Department, California Highway Patrol and Mono County Sheriff will enforce a “zero tolerance” policy with respect to the possession and use of fireworks, including safe and sane. Fireworks violations will be strictly enforced.

Reds Meadow Road Shuttle Begins Service - begins July 2

The Reds Meadow Shuttle Service, provided by Eastern Sierra Transit Authority, begins service on Friday, July 2.  On July 2, all regular rules and fees will be put in place, including mandatory use of the shuttle bus. Information on fees, the mandatory shuttle bus and exception vehicles can be obtained on the Inyo National Forest website. Mammoth Track Club 

Youth Camps

The Mammoth Track Club will be hosting two week-long youth camps from July 5-9 and August 2-6. Join Olympic and National caliber coaches at the Whitmore Track from 8-10am (Monday-Friday) and learn how to improve your endurance, speed, agility and motivation. For only $25 per camp, this is a great way to introduce your kids to running and can also be considered an 'all-sport conditioning' session. For more information or to register, please click here.


Adult Membership and Practice

Practices at the Whitmore Track run every Tuesday morning at 7am from June through October. Membership is $50 for the season and you can register here.


Elevate Mammoth

Elevate is Mammoth Hospital's community prevention, wellness, and performance institute focused on improving the health of our community through facilitating positive lifestyle choices and providing the necessary knowledge, resources, and skills. Elevate was launched in the Spring of 2021 by Mammoth Hospital. Join a variety of virtual and in-person wellness programs including yoga, support groups, prenatal classes, and education series on nutrition and mindfulness.  Check out all of their classes and schedule here.

Mammoth Lakes Library Story Hour

Join Mammoth Lakes library for a virtual story every Wednesday at 10:30am in English and in Spanish on the first and third Fridays of the month via the Mammoth Lakes Library Facebook Page. Mammoth Library also has a resource page to keep school aged children busy while learning from home.

Learn how you can camp like a pro this summer. The Eastern Sierra Dispersed Camping Collaboration’s (ESDCC) developed a five-point campaign to improve management of dispersed camping.
