Winter Fitness Challenge: 50+ Miles by end of March

Mammoth Lakes Winter Fitness Challenge

Take the 50+ Mile Challenge! Whether it be skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, running, biking, sledding, climbing, ice skating, etc. commit to completing 50 miles by the end of March.

How it works:

  1. Pick your activity
  2. Log your miles
  3. Submit your mileage as you complete them or weekly by taking a pic of your log and emailing it to parksandrec@townofmammothlakes.ca.gov .
  4. We will update our standings every Monday here and on Facebook (Mammoth Parks N Rec). 

All submissions due March 31. Prizes awarded April 3.

Snowman Building Competition

With the upcoming weather we are extending the submission period for the snowman building competition. Submit a picture of your snowman to our Facebook Event Page here or email to parksandrec@townofmammothlakes.ca.gov. 

Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: 

Most Creative
How will you stand out from the crowd? Will your snowman make us laugh, change our perspective or be fashionably accessorized? 

Recreation Themed
Give your snowman a sense of adventure. What do they like to do? Ski? Climb? Knit? Snorkel? 

People's Choice
All submissions will be entered into a poll where the public can vote on their favorite snowman.


Mammoth Ice Rink 

Come skate with us this winter! Public skate occurs daily in set session times. Space in these individual session times is limited, arrive early and don't forget your mask! More information and live schedule is available at www.MammothIceRink.com.

Ongoing Programs

Mono County Library: Written Stories 

Join the Mono County Library for this free extra-curricular activity and explore the evolutionary development of human storytelling throughout the school year. Open to all Mono County teens and young adults in grades 9-12. Each series will have span multiple weeks with a different theme. The Written Stories on Thursday evenings from 3:30 to 5:30 pm will start in January and run through April, join for one evening or the full series and discover the way images can tell a story. Get more info and register today! 

MAC After School Programs

The After-School Art Clubs are available for students in the Mammoth Unified & Eastern Sierra school districts.  The After-School Art Club is a weekly club with a rotation of learning in visual art, media arts, theatre, and dance. The program is open to children ages 5 – 17 and will provide students the opportunity to express themselves artistically in a safe and nurturing environment. Through our After-School Art Clubs, students in Mono County are exposed to art they may not receive in school. As often as possible, the arts and craft projects will include cultural components. Mammoth Lakes Library Virtual Homework Zone

Volunteer high school students will work with K-8 students as Homework Coaches, using their own academic experience to help along their younger peers.  Each VHZ is facilitated by the Youth Librarian, Miss Carissa, though Homework Coaches will work with individual students or small groups in zoom break-out rooms.  In these distant times, one-on-one connections like this can make a big difference. Held weekly on Wednesdays from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. Get more information and register here. 

Mono County Virtual Peapod

Socialize with other families in Mono County online in English each Monday and Friday at 10:00 am with Mono Kids Virtual Peapods click here for the Zoom links and on Wednesdays at 6:00 pm on Facebook Live. Spanish Peapod meets virtually on Wednesdays from 1:00 to 1:30. More information is available here.

Mammoth Lakes Library Story Hour 

Join Mammoth Lakes library for a virtual story hour Wednesdays at 10:30 am in English and in Spanish on the first and third Fridays of the month via the Mammoth Lakes Library Facebook Page. Mammoth Library also has a resource page to keep school aged children busy while learning from home.

Quarantine Kitchen

Check out Community Service Solutions Quarantine Kitchen Live on Facebook every Friday for some yummy and healthy recipe ideas. Fun for the whole family to follow along plus great ideas for staying healthy on a tight budget. More information is available here. 

Fitness Fridays

Kids can join fitness Fridays for a free virtual fitness class. K-2 is held from 12:15-12:45pm and grades 3-5 is held from 1:00-1:30. Email Jenna (jmccarthycss@gmail.com) to register and get the zoom link. 

Parks and Facilities Update

For a full update visit our parks and facilities status page here. Whitmore Track and Field remains open with portable restrooms in place. Public restrooms are also available at Mammoth Creek Park and Trails End Park. With the mild snow conditions some Multi-Use Pathways (MUPs) within town have reopened for winter access. Trails currently open are indicated in yellow below:

Winter Race Series

Hosted by Inyo County Search and Rescue and Sage to Summit in Bishop, CA, this race series is a fundraiser to support our local volunteer Search and Rescue team. All race donations support medical training and the General Fund for the all-volunteer Inyo County SAR. There will be three races in the Series that are each open for one week. Each race will be 5k. Your run must be run between 00:00 Sunday morning and 23:59 Saturday night, and results must be submitted by 23:59 on the Sunday after the race window. The first race ends Sunday, January 24.There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place recognition for each race (for all three races) in the following categories Male, Female, Kids, (12 and under). There will be an overall winner for the Series in Male, Female, Kids, and Team. Get more info here. Register and run the first leg of this series this weekend! 

Mammoth Trails Community Meeting

Rescheduled to January 21 after last week's power outage. Mammoth Trails meetings give the Mammoth Lakes Trails System Trails Manager and trail users the opportunity to discuss what is happening in the local trails world. All trail users are encouraged to attend these meetings to learn and participate in the future of local trails. Winter Adventure Series: "Working Dogs of the Eastern Sierra"

Author Jennifer Crittenden will discuss her book "Working Dogs of the Eastern Sierra". Stories and photographs of the real dogs who work on the east side of the Sierra Nevada in California. These hard-working dogs work in snow and dust. They entertain and save us. They protect us and guard our livestock. They comfort us and find our loved ones. MAC Art and Wine: Minaret Skies

Join the wildly talented Miguel Flores virtually as he guides you through an acrylic interpretation of our local Minarets with rainbow sky. All abilities welcome. This event will be held virtually on January 21 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Pre-registration is required, register here.

Regional Stay Home Order in Effect

Mono County is now under new restrictions outlined in the Regional Stay Home Order. Outdoor recreation is still permitted to operate with mitigations. Campgrounds in our region are now closed. Read more about the Regional Stay Home Order here.
